Glossary of Terms for the Internet
Anonymous FTP - Using an FTP program you log on to another computer to
copy files even though you do not have an account on that computer. You sign on
as anonymous.
ASCII - American Standard Code for Information Interchange
A standard that assigns unique binary numbers to all of the letters of the
alphabet, the digits 0-9, punctuation marks and control characters. ASCII codes
are used in computers for representing text and for transmitting that text
between computers and peripheral devices such as modems, disk drives and tape
drives.

Bandwidth - a term used to describe the capacity for amount and speed of
data transmission. Usually measured in Kilobits per second. (Kbps)
Binary File - File that contains information that does not consist only
of text. (Example: a picture (BMP), a spreadsheet, a word-processing document)

Domain Name - indicates the name of the system of location of the
computer. The last three letters usually indicate the type of organization.

A network service than enables users to send and receive messages via computer.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
A list of Frequently Asked Questions about a particular subject and the answers.
Used regularly in newsgroups read before posting any questions to the newsgroup.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol
A protocol that determines how files are transferred from one computer to
another.

Gopher - A system that lets you find information by using menus.

HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
The protocol that allows information transfer of the World Wide Web.
HTML - Hypertext Markup Language
The language used to create World Wide Web pages that can be viewed with a World
Wide Web browser.

Internet - A World Wide interconnected group of computer networks
Internet Address - An address for a computer on a network. The address
consists of a network number and a host number that is unique for that network.
IP - Internet Protocol
The internetworking protocol that forms the basis of the Internet.
ISP - Internet Service Provider
An organization that provides connections to the Internet

Packet - A unit of information that has been formatted for transmission
on a network.
POTS - Plain Old Telephone Service
A terms used for standard analog telecommunications.
PPP - Point-to-Point Protocol
A protocol that enables a computer to communicate with other computers using
TCP/IP over standard telephone lines and high-speed modems.

Search Engine - a service that tracks many sites on the Internet.
SLIP - Serial Line Internet Protocol
A protocol that enables a computer to communicate with other computers using
TCP/IP over standard telephones lines and high-speed modems.

Telnet - A program that lets you log onto other computers on the Net.
TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
The suite of networking protocols that allows different types of computers to
communicate across the Internet.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator A method of naming and identifying network
resources.
USENET News - A system of thousands of distributed bulletin boards called

WAIS - Wide-Area Information Servers - A system that allows one to search
for documents that contain desired information.
WWW - World Wide Web - A hypermedia system that allows one to browse
information stored. on computers globally
Web Browser - a program that lets the user type in an Internet address
(URL) and instantly moves to the location on the Internet.
